About the Book

If you're looking for something much darker, Alchemised is the book on this list that immediately announces itself as a very different kind of fantasy experience.

SenLinYu's debut is a dark fantasy set in a war-torn world ruled by corrupt guild families and necromancers. Helena Marino was once a promising alchemist, but she is now a prisoner with missing memories, suppressed abilities and a past she can no longer fully access.

Her captors want answers about what happened during the final stages of the war, and Helena is sent to a powerful necromancer who may be able to uncover the memories buried inside her mind.

But the more Helena discovers about her past, the more complicated her captivity, her identity and the world around her become. The book is a standalone dark fantasy and runs to more than 1,000 pages in the US hardcover edition.

What the Story Feels Like

Dark. Gothic. Claustrophobic. Intense.

At least, that is the mood I'm expecting from it.

This doesn't sound like a fantasy world where I will be casually wandering through a magical marketplace and admiring pretty dresses.

This sounds like the kind of book where the atmosphere itself is part of the story.

Necromancers. War. Captivity. Missing memories. A ruined world. A powerful man trying to uncover Helena's past.

There is something deeply unsettling about not knowing whether the protagonist can trust her own memories — and that alone makes me want to keep turning the pages.

Why You Should Read It

If you enjoy dark fantasy with complicated characters, gothic atmosphere, necromancy, alchemy and psychological mystery, this is probably one to look into.

What particularly caught my attention is the mystery surrounding Helena's missing memories.

She knows she was part of the Resistance. She knows she survived the war. But there are pieces of her own history that she cannot access.

And when your enemies are actively trying to uncover those memories, you immediately have the kind of mystery that makes it difficult to stop reading.

What Makes It Memorable

The scale.

Alchemised is a substantial book, and the world-building appears to match that ambition.

There is an entire post-war society built around necromancy, guild families and undead creatures, alongside a deeply personal story about identity, memory and survival. The official book description describes it as a dark fantasy about a woman with missing memories fighting to survive in a world of necromancy and alchemy.

That combination of enormous world-building and an intensely personal mystery is exactly what makes me curious.

Reading Experience

I am expecting this to be a commitment.

It's more than 1,000 pages in the US edition, and this isn't the kind of premise that sounds like something I could skim through casually.

This feels like a “cancel my plans, bring snacks and don't talk to me until I'm finished” kind of book.

And sometimes those are exactly the books I want.

Perfect For Readers Who

  • Love dark fantasy and gothic fantasy
  • Enjoy necromancy and alchemy
  • Want morally complicated characters
  • Love mysteries involving memory and identity
  • Enjoy atmospheric and psychologically intense stories
  • Don't mind very long fantasy novels
  • Want a standalone fantasy rather than another long series
