About the author
Every reader has that one story about discovering an author in the most unexpected way.
Mine begins at the Delhi World Book Fair 2024.
I was wandering through the halls, doing what every book lover does best—getting distracted by books I hadn't planned to buy. Somewhere between familiar publishers and new discoveries, I stopped at the Anecdote Publishing House stall. That's where I met Nitish Bhushan.
What started as a casual conversation about books soon turned into an enthusiastic discussion about storytelling, thrillers, and the idea behind his debut novel, Love Swipe Blackmail. Like every passionate author, he spoke about his book with genuine excitement—not as someone trying to sell a copy, but as someone eager to share a story he truly believed in.
By the time I walked away from the stall, I had a signed copy in my hands and a promise to read it soon.
Looking back today, I'm incredibly glad I stopped at that stall.
That chance encounter marked the beginning of a connection that has now lasted several years. Our conversations continued long after the book fair ended, moving from discussing books to discussing writing itself. When Nitish began working on his second novel, Shadow Play, I had the privilege of joining the journey as one of its beta readers.
Reading a manuscript before publication is a fascinating experience. You don't just follow the story—you watch it evolve. Characters become richer, scenes become sharper, twists become tighter, and with every revision, the novel grows into the book readers eventually hold in their hands. Being trusted with that process gave me an entirely new appreciation for the patience and persistence behind writing a thriller.
That is one of the reasons this Author Spotlight feels particularly special to me.
While I always enjoy introducing readers to new authors, this time I also get to celebrate someone whose writing journey I've been fortunate enough to witness from close quarters. From meeting him as a debut novelist at a book fair to reading an early version of his second novel, it has been wonderful watching his confidence as a storyteller grow with every new project.
Today, Nitish Bhushan has established himself as a compelling voice in Indian techno-thrillers—a genre that combines fast-paced suspense with questions about technology, relationships, digital privacy, ethics, and the increasingly blurred boundaries between our online and offline lives.
His stories don't simply ask "What if technology fails us?" They ask something far more interesting: "What happens when ordinary people are forced to make extraordinary moral choices because of technology?"
If you enjoy thrillers that feel contemporary, thought-provoking, and deeply rooted in the realities of the digital age, Nitish Bhushan is an author worth discovering.
Biography
Nitish Bhushan is an Indian techno-thriller author whose stories explore the intersection of technology, human relationships, ethics, and suspense.
With more than seventeen years of experience in the Information Technology industry, he brings an authentic understanding of the digital world into his fiction. Rather than treating technology as a distant concept or futuristic idea, he uses it as something deeply woven into everyday life—showing how innovation can influence trust, identity, privacy, ambition, and human relationships.
Over the course of his professional career, Nitish has lived and worked across Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and now Gurugram. These experiences, combined with years spent working with people from different industries and backgrounds, have shaped the observational style that readers often notice in his writing.
Alongside his work as an author, he is the founder of Trueval Partners, a Brand, Marketing & Communications firm. His understanding of communication, branding, and human behaviour naturally finds its way into his fiction, where characters are rarely defined by simple notions of right and wrong. Instead, they navigate complicated choices that feel believable because they mirror the complexities of real life.
Nitish describes his own writing best:
"I write thrillers that blend technology, relationships, and moral dilemmas. When I'm not writing, I'm exploring the stories hidden in everyday life—stories that make you think, laugh, or question the world around you."
That philosophy extends beyond his novels.
He regularly shares thoughts, observations, and conversations through his newsletter Kisse aur Kahaniyan, inviting readers into the creative process and encouraging discussions that go beyond books.
He also writes four recurring micro-columns that reflect his diverse interests:
- #KahaniHaiNaAmazing — celebrating everyday stories worth telling.
- #PadhnaZarooriHai — encouraging reading and literary conversations.
- #MarketingZarooriHai — sharing insights from branding and communication.
- #FitnessZarooriHai — highlighting the importance of physical well-being.
This combination of technology, business, storytelling, and everyday observation gives his work a distinctive voice. His novels are not driven solely by mystery or action; they are equally interested in the emotional consequences of the choices people make when faced with uncertainty.
Published through Anecdote Publishing House, Nitish has steadily built a reputation among readers who enjoy contemporary thrillers grounded in today's realities rather than distant fantasies. His books explore the digital age with curiosity instead of fear, asking readers to think about the systems we trust, the information we share, and the relationships we build in an increasingly connected world.
Whether through fiction, newsletters, or short-form writing, Nitish continues to prove that every ordinary moment has the potential to become an extraordinary story when viewed from the right perspective.

Your novels blend technology, suspense, relationships, and moral dilemmas. What first drew you to the techno-thriller genre, and what excites you most about writing in it??
Nitish Bhushan
Technology has pervaded into lives so much that it easily plays a non-linear role. A single social media post can reach millions within hours. It can go viral, influence public opinion, damage or enhance reputations, affect stock prices, and spark social movements. If you remove technology, the way we know it, from the equation, we would be like fish out of water.
I wanted to explore through my characters and plots and sub-plots the interplay of our desires and ambitions in the context of this ubiquitous presence of technology around us. It doesn’t matter if it is intimate like dating apps or institutional like cyber security, or pervasive like AI. Technology today impacts our relationships more than we know it.
The more we depend on technology, the more vulnerable we seem to become. Through my LSB Trilogy, I explore these vulnerabilities, the moral dilemmas they create, and the complex ways in which our relationships intersect with technology.

Technology often changes faster than society can adapt to it. Is that tension something you consciously explore in your stories??

Love Swipe Blackmail explores modern dating in a digitally connected world. What inspired you to examine relationships through the lens of technology and online interactions??
Nitish Bhushan
The inspiration came from the damage we can do to ourselves and the people we love, while being cavalier in our digital interactions on dating apps. The misuse of these platforms is so widespread that people with genuine intentions have emerged deeply scarred while using match-making apps.
Losing money to an online scam is one thing; it can be earned back. But when someone wins your trust and exploits it later along with your emotions and innocence, the scars run much deeper and often last far longer.
Through Love Swipe Blackmail, I wanted to explore how technology can amplify the insecurities, misunderstandings, and unresolved emotions that already exist in our relationships. In the novel, the danger does not come from a stranger on a dating app. Instead, a seemingly harmless action on the app sets off a chain of events when someone from the protagonist's past spots him there and exploits his presence. The story examines how, in a digitally connected world, our online actions can intersect with our personal histories in unexpected and often unsettling ways.

Both technology and social media can connect people while also making them vulnerable. How do you decide which real-world concerns are worth turning into fiction??

One aspect readers may notice in your work is that your characters aren't purely heroes or villains. What attracts you to writing morally grey characters rather than clearly defined good and bad ones??
Nitish Bhushan

When creating a character facing an ethical dilemma, do you begin with the plot, the technology, or the human conflict at the center of the story??
Nitish Bhushan
I usually begin with the plot, but at the heart of that plot is always a human conflict. I don't see technology itself as the source of the ethical dilemma. Technology is a tool. The real dilemma emerges from how people choose to use that tool. Do they allow it to amplify their desires, insecurities, and ambitions? Or do people consciously prevent technology from amplifying their desires, insecurities, and ambitions? What are the motivations, desires, fears, and vulnerabilities they bring to it?
I must add that AI is an exception. AI is a tool with a mind and agency of its own, even if it is limited compared to us. It is possible that AI can actually engineer, shape or distort the desires, insecurities, and ambitions of people themselves.

Which character from your books challenged you the most as a writer, and why??
Nitish Bhushan
The antagonist challenges me the most. It is because they are not necessarily inhuman or bad. But their motivations make them arrive at decisions that oppose the protagonist and drive conflict.
Left to themselves, they are often intelligent, and capable and worthy of love. The real work is not in making them evil, but in making their choices understandable, even when those choices stand in direct opposition to the protagonist.

Your stories feel rooted in contemporary realities rather than distant futures. How much research goes into ensuring the technological aspects of your novels feel authentic??
Nitish Bhushan
For the first part, Love Swipe Blackmail, I did not have to dive deep in understanding the tech (dating apps). The goal was not to describe the tech or its backend per se. It was more about the use of a dating app by the protagonist in pursuit of what felt was important to them; the dilemma it created, the challenge that followed and the fallout that engulfed all – a human story. But I had to run a few thought experiments on clearly defining the motivations of the antagonist.
As for its sequel, Shadow Play: Love and Blackmail, those who have read it, really liked how the complicated topic of cyberattacks and cyber-defence was broken down, to make even the most complex tech sound readable and simple. So, this is where I carried out a lot of research to understand technology. Of course, human emotions and motivations played an even deeper role here, but it was relatively easier to build on the motivations that were on display in the first part.
